Welcome

You Are Not Alone

My friend, are you among the…

… one-third of Americans who feel they are living with extreme stress?

… one-half of Americans who feel that their stress has increased over the past five years?

… one-half of Americans who lie awake at night due to stress?

… three-quarters of Americans whose leading case of stress is money and/or work?

You don’t need to be… and I will help you!

Why You Need To Relax

If you’re like most people, you live a high-stress life. Maybe it’s a fast paced job; or perhaps mortgage, car payment, and growing credit card debt; or even failing relationships (having trouble relating to your kids or your spouse, perhaps?) and overall lack of control over your life.

Physiologically, your body treats all of these as “threats”, and responds accordingly. How does your body respond to threats? You’ve probably heard of the “fight or flight” reaction. It’s your body’s natural response to threats – kind of like an alarm system. As soon as your body perceives a threat, it pumps adrenaline and cortisol throughout your system. This boosts your heart rate and your body’s energy. It increases the glucose (your blood-sugar) in your bloodstream, as well other chemicals that repair muscle tissue. It also turns off your body’s “nonessential” functions; your immune, digestive, and reproductive systems.  This is all to prime you to respond to the threat – to either run away or to stand and fight. If you’re interested, the Wikipedia article has a lot of detail about the biological response of stress.

Usually your body returns to normal once the threat has passed. However, constant exposure to stressors can lead to a long-term “fight or flight” state. This overdosing of adrenaline and cortisol can disrupt all of your body’s functions.

There are two problems with this: first, when you encounter difficulties in life, the *last* thing you need is to waste your energy worrying. Second, remaining in a stressed out state is actually harmful to your health in many ways. It can increase your risk of obesity, heart disease, sleeping problems, depression, memory troubles. The real kicker is that it destroys your immune system – so you get sicker more frequently, which probably adds to your stress!

While part of your response to stress is genetic, you can learn how to deal with stressful situations and change your attitudes and lifestyle to become a calmer, more relaxed, healthier person.

The first step to a calmer and healthier life is recognizing that something in your life needs to change. The only thing you can change in your life is yourself – and by taking this course, you are taking that first step.
